Biking Hot Spots in New England:

Rail-trail biking is an awesome, breath-taking, healthy, and fun activity. The following rail-trails were made from old railroad lines. The railroad tracks were removed and a smooth paved surface was put in place leaving a mini-road for bikers, hikers, and skaters. Check back periodically as I will be adding new rail trails to the site as I sample them.

  • Cape Cod Rail Trail extends from Dennis to Wellfleet. This is an amazing ride. The air smells so fresh as you ride through lush green surroundings. Stop off in Orleans for a lunch or small treat.
Ocean Edge Resort, Brewster, Massachusetts. Great place to stay with access to Cape Cod Rail Trail. Bicycle rentals on site.
  • Lake Champlain Rail Trail or Local Motion Island Line Trail, Burlington Vermont. Be sure to get a good map and directions to take you from beginning to end of this beautiful trail. After the pavement of the trail ends, you will be on a gravel surface that covers a thin strip of land that goes straight out into the lake! You feel like you are biking on water. What a view! This is a "Must-Bike" exhilarating adventure! You can rent bikes at various rental shops such as local motion (see link above).
Wyndham Hotel, Burlington. Good accommodations with great view of the lake and very close to the rail trail. Check out Church Street for great outdoor dining, cafes, bars, and shops…very similar to Faneuil Hall in Boston … the street is closed off to vehicles. Save some room for a small chocolate chip or Belgium chocolate ice cream at Lake Champlain Chocolates. You will be thanking me with every spoonful. Remember eat slowly and savor every bite. No guilt!
  • Minuteman Bikeway, Bedford to Cambridge, Massachusetts. Stop off in Lexington or Arlington for a bite to eat. You can rent bikes at Bikeway Source in Bedford.

  • Martha's Vineyard Rail Trails, Massachusetts.
Island Inn, The price is right at this inn which is located on the paved trail between Oak Bluffs and Edgartown. Ask at the desk and a bike company can deliver rental bikes, helmets, and locks directly to the hotel for your convenience.

The room we stayed in had a kitchenette, so we were able to store healthy foods easily in our room. We packed natural nut butter (try cashew, almond, or of course, peanut butter) and jelly sandwiches on Matthew's whole grain bread, plus Kashi Go Lean cereal and Barbara's Puffins cereal with fruit, nuts, and raisins, which were easy to pack in zip-lock type bags for our biking excursions.

There are wonderful farm stores on the island that carry the freshest breads and produce. I like Morning Glory Farm right on the bike path. A healthy dinner can be found at Theo's (this is at the Inn at Blueberry Hill- you will need transportation to get there). Don't miss the amazing bruschetta garlic bread at Giordano's in Oak Bluffs- practice moderation, of course!

  • 1000 Great Rail-Trails: A Comprehensive Directory (Check out the Rails to Trails Conservancy)

    Healthy Activities

  • Ice Skating at Larz Anderson Park, Brookline. As you know, if you live in New England, winter is 6 months long!!! You cannot weight (pun intended!) 'til the warmer weather to start to exercise. You must make a winter plan and you don't have to become a gym rat (unless you want to) to do so. Make it fun and try ice-skating. You can ice skate at the Larz Anderson outside rink in Brookline. What a delight!
